All student positions must be filled by students of Com 104. The breaking of these policies will result in grade reduction and possible removal from the Express staff at the discretion of the advisor.

Advisor
The advisor for the Express student newspaper (theexpressonline.com) is also the instructor for COM 104, a course that is directly connected to the student newspaper at the University of Wisconsin-Richland. The advisor helps guide students through the production of the student journalism and makes executive decisions on what content appears online. The advisor also selects the student editor. The advisor also works with the university and students to ensure proper use of the online publication.

Editor
The student editor is a member of the COM 104 course. The editor is selected by the Advisor/Instructor. As editor, this student oversees the production of student-centered material for the Express and helps guide the purpose of the publication. The Editor also selects stories and photos to appear in the publication. The editor reports to the advisor. The editor’s ability to write, edit and manage the publication will count as the editor’s COM 104 grade.

Managing Editor
The Managing Editor works closely with the editor and the advisor for special projects and in editing the stories for errors, misspellings, etc. The managing editor works with reporters and copy editors, as well as photographers, in assigning stories, managing deadlines and editing copy. The managing editor reports to the editor and advisor. The managing editor’s participation and completion of assignments in COM 104 will contribute to their grade.

Copy Editor
A copy editor is one who edits stories and content on the web site for errors. The copy editor reports to the managing editor and works with reporters on answering questions on story content. A copy editor reports to the managing editor. Copy editors will also complete writing assignments for their grade in COM 104.

Webmaster
The webmaster works with editors and the advisor on maintaining the web site and working on assigned projects to update the site and implement new media, as well as filter online comments from users. The webmaster reports to the editor, managing editor and advisor. The webmaster’s online work and participation will count as the student’s work for COM 104.

Photographer
The photographer is responsible for meeting deadlines with photographs assigned to them by the advisor and editors, as well as any breaking news or photos the photographer is interested in as special projects. They are responsible for working with reporters on matching photos with their stories. Photographers reports to the managing editor, editor and advisor. The photographer’s work will count as their assignments in COM 104.

Business Manager
The business manager is selected by the advisor, and reports directly to the advisor. The business manager is responsible for working with local businesses to get advertising for the Express. The business manager also works with the advisor and Business Services, as well as other departments and committees of the University, to work on the Express budget and segregated fees. The business manager needs to also work with designers and the art director to create the ads for the Express. This participation will count for the student’s COM 104 grade.

Art Director
The art director is responsible for working with the webmaster and the business manager to create advertisements and other projects for the web site and any other projects. The art director reports to the editor and advisor. His or her work will count for the COM 104 grade.

Reporter
Most students in COM 104 will act as reporters. The stories they work on for their grades will also be used for the Express web site. Reporters are responsible for completing their assignments on deadline and meeting the standards of the stories and course according to the course syllabus. Reporters must work with the editors and photographers to complete assignments. They report to the editors and the advisor.

Videographer
The videographer works with the editor and reporters to create videos for the web based on assignments given to them or approved by editors. The videographer must work with the webmaster on the production and publication of works. The videographer reports to the advisor and editor. The video work will count as the student’s COM 104 grade.

Removal of positions
The advisor reserves the right to remove an editor or another student from his or her role after a written warning if students break rules or do not comply with directions from the advisor or editors. Removal from a position will result in a grade reduction for COM 104.
